Some information on St. Nicholas Church at Old Town Square

St. Nicholas Church at Old Town Square is a cathedral with its own very interesting history. It was first mentioned in 1273.  Since that time, the Church has undergone multiple changes in its exterior and purpose. First, it was the place of sermons by Hussites, then Benedictines followed by the Catholics and Orthodox. At the time of Napoleon wars, it served as a cornhouse as well as a warehouse for books and furniture, and at the time of World War II, St. Nicholas Church served as a headquarters of Czech partisans.

The church was on fire and was destroyed during wars multiple times, so its architecture changed over time. Initially, St. Nicholas Church at Old Town Square was built in Roman style, later it acquired Gothic features, and then it was restored in Renaissance style with Baroque elements. However, despite a lot of commotions and changes, this cathedral managed to preserve its grandeur.

Nowadays St. Nicholas Church at Old Town Square in Prague is the landmark in Baroque style that belongs to Hussite Church. It is one of the most beautiful and frequently visited places of the Czech capital.

Attractions of St. Nicholas Church in Prague

Apart from the organ consisting of 2,500 pipes, St. Nicholas Church at Old Town Square offers a lot of interesting attractions. The first thing you will see is a huge crystal chandelier shaped as a crown. Historians are still arguing over its origin. Some assert that this unique chandelier was presented to the Church by Nicholas II, others think it was the gift from Alexander II. Whichever is true, the chandelier undoubtedly is made on a royal scale and never fails to call tourists' admiration.

The interior of St. Nicholas Church is full of gilt elements that magically glitter under the sunlight refracted by stained glass windows. You should also pay your attention to the main altar made of artificial marble. Only touching it, you can understand it is not a real stone. The thing is that marble at the medieval times was extremely expensive and was brought from Italy. So the Czechs invented a visual analogue of the marble that was made of wood and covered by a special composition.

Both exterior and interior of the building are ornamented by the sculptures of the patron saints of the Czech Republic, Biblical stories, allegorical embodiment of virtues and fanciful frescoes. Each element has its own history and is worth your attention.

In all this splendor the magnificent organ sounds especially beautifully!
