What you will see

Our guide will tell you stories of people, who lived in the camp during the World War II. Terezín was founded in the late 18th century by the Emperor Joseph II. The enormous building, which covers a total of 398 hectares, could accommodate the army of 60,000 soldiers and enough food to survive for 3.5 months. But military glory was not the only reason why the town was known all over the world. It had housed the first concentration camp the world has ever seen.

The former fortress was turned to a refugee center for Czech people fleeing Adolf Hitler's annexation of Sudetenland. While the rest of the country was falling into Nazi paws, the center became a Gestapo prison, a Jewish ghetto, and then the deportation camp sending trains directly to Auschwitz. Terezín history is a intertwining of life and death: the Holocaust tragedy contrasted with prisoners' secret celebrations of diverse origin, their political views and beliefs.
